Gotland, the largest island of Sweden, situated in the Baltic Sea, half way to the Baltic countries, offers a rich history as well as a varied landscape where the sea never is far away. 57 000 people live year round on the island, a number that changes dramatically during the summer as Gotland is one of Sweden’s most popular summer destinations.

Visby, with 22 700 habitants, was one of the biggest and most important trading towns of the Baltic region in medieval times. Visby has the most well preserved medieval curtain wall of all of northern Europe, and the narrow alleys in the old town are lined with buildings and church ruins that call to mind Visby’s age of greatness in the 13th century. The Hanseatic town of Visby is a World Heritage since 1995…..
Due to the chalky and at some places very fertile soil, the agriculture always was an important industry for the island. This is today showed in a wide range of newly developed companies, based on agriculture, sold to the tourists and exported from the island with the brand of Gotland.

Sunday 19th of August
09.00  Bus departure from hotels in Stockholm for transfer to Nynäshamn.
12.15 Departure with ferry to Gotland, lunch will be served on board.
15.45 Arrival in Gotland, pick up by taxi.

16.00 Check in to The Medieval Hotel. Time to refresh. This small, exclusive hotel, is situated in the very heart of UNESCO World Heritage City of Visby. The hotel is built in an authentic 14th century house and decorated with historically inspired interiors and especially designed furniture in solid wood.
17.45 Visit to the Brewery of Gotland where the group will get a presentation and taste of the local beer production. The brewery is owned by Mr Johan Spendrup, part of the Spendrup family which is the largest brewing group in Sweden.
Sigthseeing by foot in the old town of Visby.
In the evening, BBQ lamb will be served at out door restaurant Frimis, both food and atmosphere will bring your mind back to the medieval.

Monday 20th of August
Breakfast buffet is served at the hotel.
09.00 bus departure for a full day in the countryside.
Visit Bro Biogas, the first bio gas plant on Gotland, delivering energy mainly to Arla’s Dairy plant and vehicles on the island.
Visit Sojdungs Farm and the Charolais group that has become a famous trademark for the beef market, sold mainly in Stockholm. The owner of the farm also has his own production of agricultural machinery.
Visit to Ejmunds Farm with its production of “Simgus” a crossbread of Angus and Simmental. Presentation of net working, projects within the Swedish governments project “Sweden - the New Culinary Nation” and the work done on Gotland to improve presenting local food traditions etc. Riina Noodapera, project manager, joins the group.
Lunch plate with Gotlandic delicacies is served on the farm.
Visit at Näsudden Windpark. Already in 1979 a prototype was built here, in order to make research and learn about wind power.

Visit at Lilla Bjers Farmshop Västerhejde (see photo taken by Margareta Hoas). All farming is organic and carries the KRAV label, which certifies organic farming. Lilla Bjers has plantations of white, green and lilac asparagus. Other crops are strawberries, potatoes, garlic, onions and tubers. On the farm there are also spices, tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn and melons. The arts and crafts are made of wood, leather and metal, and inspired by medieval designs as well as armour. (Riina says goodbye to the group en route.)
On the way back to Visby we’ll pass Högklint Rock with a stunning view over the coastline and Visby.
Back to your hotel to freshen up.
A 3 cours dinner is served at Restaurant Friheten

Tuesday 21st of August
Breakfast and check out.
09.00 The bus will pick up the participants for a new day on the island.

Visit Roma Monastery and Gotland Whisky, the new inhabitants in the former Sugar plant in Roma; The company was founded in 2004 and has since developed in terms of materials, techniques and craft of whisky production. Everything has a thorough ecological approach, from raw materials, packaging and building materials to the energy choices for process and space heating.

Visit at Rommunds Sheep farm, Gammelgarn. The farm’s specialty is beautiful, silky, curly, grey sheep and lamb hides. The animal welfare is in focus and the lambs grow up, with their mothers, grazing on the herb rich meadows. An intensive breeding work lies behind the success of beautiful hides.
Lunch at Sysne Fish shop, Östergarnslandet. Family owned business at the Sysne fishing village. Enjoy fresh smoked fish.
A short visit in a Gotlandic “Änge” in Kräklingbo with information about the Gotlandic truffles as famous as the French and Italian one’s. The Gotland black truffle grows wild on the island and it’s the lime rich soil that gives the truffle its unique flavor.
Transfer back to Visby and your flight to Arlanda airport.
