56th IFAJ Congress In Sweden

The 56th IFAJ Congress is August 15-19, and focuses on "Solutions for a green future".

The conference will take place near Lake Mälaren, 35 km west of Stockholm Central station.

Attendees will take advantage of one of eight different excursions and professional development activities.

The Post Congress will take place on Gotland, the biggest island of Sweden, situated in the Baltic Sea.

IFAJ Delegates To Elect Presidium in Sweden

All four seats of the IFAJ Presidium are up for election at the 56th IFAJ Congress in Sweden. Positions include, president, vice president, treasurer and secretary general. Delegates will elect new presidium members to serve the organization from 2012-2014.

The following are running for IFAJ Presidium roles:

Running for IFAJ President is Markus Rediger of Switzerland. Markus is the Managing Editor of Landwirtschaftlicher Informationsdienst  for the Agricultural Information Center LID in Bern, Switzerland.

Currently Markus serves on the IFAJ presidium as Vice President. He served as treasurer from 2004-2008. He co-chaired the 49th IFAJ congress held in Switzerland and is active with the Swiss Guild of Agricultural Journalists.

Vice President
Owen Roberts is one of two candidates for the vice presidential role. He is the director of research communications and an agricultural communications professor at the University of Guelph, in Canada. He is also a freelance journalist.

He currently serves as the IFAJ Secretary General. He co-chaired the  2011 IFAJ Congress in Canada and helped developed the IFAJ-Alltech Young Leaders in Agricultural Journalism award and Master Class program. He has been involved with the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation since 1988.

Katharina Seuser, Germany, is also running for vice president. She is a professor of journalism and media production at the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, Northrhine-Westfalia, Germany. She is also a freelance journalist.

She has chaired the German Association of Agricultural Journalists VDAJ since 2006 and chaired the regional group of Agricultural Journalists in Bonn since 2005. She chaired the IFAJ Star Prize of Agricultural Photography from 2007-2009.

Secretary General
Running for secretary general is Riitta Mustonen of Finland. She is a journalist in Maaseudun Tulevaisuus, working with the Farmers’ Union Newspaper.

Riitta is a member of the board of Agricultural Journalists’ guild of Finland and former president of the guild. She helped arrange the IFAJ Congresses in Finland in 1986 and 2001 and the pre-congress tour in 2012.

James Campbell of Northern Ireland is running for treasurer. James is the editor of the Northern Edition of Irish Farmers Journal.

He has served as IFAJ treasurer since 2008. James is an active member of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists of Ireland, and served as the Northern Section of the Guild’s treasurer for 20 years. He is also a past chairman of the Northern Section and was president of the ‘All-Ireland’ Guild from 1993 until 1996. During this period he chaired the organising committee for the IFAJ Congress held in 1996.

2012 IFAJ Master Class & Bootcamp

Agricultural journalists from across the globe will participate in the annual IFAJ Master Class and Bootcamp prior to the 2012 IFAJ Congress.

Programs being Sunday, August 12 and wrap up Tuesday, August 14.

Workshops are lead by IFAJ member journalists and cover interviewing, new media, and trends in agricultural journalism and ethics.

José van Gelder of Agriterra, the agricultural development agency based in the Netherlands, is in charge of organizing the event.
