NORTH AMERICAN agricultural communications organisations have raised $9,685 to provide relief to rural Japanese people affected by the earthquake and tsunami disaster. “Many of us in ag journalism have colleagues in Japan we’ve known for many years, so this tragedy has hit us close to home,” said Den Gardner, executive director of the American Agricultural Editors Association and the Agricultural Relations Council, and co-ordinator of the fundraising effort. The European Commission has organised a meeting of agricultural journalists in Brussels on June 8 and 9. The EU administration says the meeting offers an excellent opportunity to journalists from the Union’s 27 member states to get to know each other, and for discussion of the idea of an EU platform for journalists interested in agriculture and rural development. mehr »

The June 15 deadline is approaching for IFAJ's newest award, the IFAJ-YARA Award for Reporting on Sustainable World Agriculture. Last year’s winner of the radio category of the IFAJ Star Prize for Agricultural Broadcasting has provided a great example of one of the benefits of being part of the IFAJ network. Katharina Seuser, the president of the German Organisation of Agricultural Journalists (VDAJ), celebrated her 50th birthday on Saturday, May 7. She organised a Latin American party in her home town of Bonn. Hot chili and salsa lessons accompanied the birthday party on the banks of the river Rhine.
