It’s Canada’s turn next!

The IFAJ torch – or should I say flag – has officially been passed to Canada as we formally assumed the role of host nation at the farewell banquet of this year’s congress in Belgium.

Contest Rules - IFAJ Star Prize for Broadcasting

The International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) Star Prize for Broadcast Journalism recognizes the best radio, television and internet broadcasting among federation member countries.  

Categories

  • Television – for the best piece produced primarily for broadcast on television.
  • Radio – for the best piece produced primarily for broadcast on radio.
  • Online radio (podcasts) – for the best audio piece produced primarily for broadcast via the internet.
  • Online video – for the best audio visual piece produced primarily for broadcast via the internet. 

Who can enter 

  • Agricultural journalism guilds from member countries in good standing in the IFAJ are welcome to submit one entry per category, from members of their guild.
  • Entries must be submitted by guilds, not by individual members.
  • It is up to each member country to determine how it selects its entry.

Eligibility

To be eligible, the entry must: 

  • Be a story of broad agricultural interest.
  • The story may be the work of more than one journalist.
  • Have been broadcast/ uploaded via television, radio or the internet between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009.
  • Be broadc*ast in English, or, in the case of other languages, be submitted with a written translation in English (the IFAJ offers assistance of up to 100 Euro per member country to cover translation costs).
  • Be a single story. Providing multiple pieces that make up a series are not allowed. In such a situation, select one story from the series to enter.  

Submission procedure  

1.       The following material must be provided via email and sent to starprize(at)ifaj.org by the deadline:

A.       An MP3 file or weblink to the story, which must be available in a format/file type which can be easily played via widely available media software such as Windows or Real Player

B.       If the story was not broadcast in English, the email must include a complete translation. This may be provided as a written transcript, or integrated into the piece in the form of subtitles.

C.       The category in which the piece is being entered.

D.       The name, address, email address and telephone number of the entrant.

E.        The name of the program or website where the story was broadcast, together with the date of the broadcast, or the date when the material was uploaded to a website.

F.        A brief (maximum 100-word) summary of the journalist’s role in creating the piece, to assist the judges in their deliberations. 

2.        For television entries, the story must be uploaded to an ftp site (address to be announced in January, 2010). The entry must include the name of the entrant and the country which they are representing. If the story was not broadcast in English, a complete translation as a written transcript, or integrated into the piece in the form of subtitles, is required.

February 1, 2010 

Judging criteria

Judging will focus primarily on the work of the journalist and not the work of the whole team involved in producing the story.  Criteria will include content and style, objectivity and balance.  

Prizes

  • The winner of each category will be awarded a certificate, a cash prize of 250 Euros and a gold pin.
  • The awards will be presented during the IFAJ Congress in Ostend, Belgium, April 17 - 21, 2010. Entrants need not be present to win.
