It’s Canada’s turn next!

The IFAJ torch – or should I say flag – has officially been passed to Canada as we formally assumed the role of host nation at the farewell banquet of this year’s congress in Belgium.

The International Federation of Agriculture Journalists (IFAJ) hosts its annual conference, called a congress, in a different member country every year. In 2011, Canada will be welcoming farm writers and agricultural communicators to our country for the first time in over forty years. More...

2008 Star Prize Winner for Agricultural Journalism

Treena Hein from Canada is the winner of the prestigious 2008 IFAJ Star Prize for Agricultural Journalism, sponsored by John Deere. The winning article, "Up with hemp," was published in 2007 in the January/February issue of the magazine, Small Farm Canada.

This award is a complete thrill," Hein said on being told the news. "I am overjoyed." "I am also delighted that hemp is receiving this world-wide attention. It is an incredible crop in so many ways. I believe alternative crops such as hemp will rightfully continue to gain ground." Treena Hein's winning story here...

Runner-up in the competition is Justin McCarthy from Ireland with an article on Brazilian beef production published in the May 26, 2007, issue of Irish Farmers Journal. According to the judges, it is "well written, well documented with good investigative techniques." Justin McCarthy's articles here...

Both Hein and McCarthy have been honoured at a prize ceremony at the 52nd IFAJ Congress in Austria and Slovenia from September 10 to 14. Read more in the media release here...
