South African Wins IFAJ 2005 Photo Contest

Andries Gouws photograph of a relaxing moment at a cattle show was the winner at the 2005 IFAJ Photo Contest. The photo had been published in the December 17, 2004, issue of the South African publication Landbou weekblad. Gouws is a member of the South African Agricultural Writers’ Association.

One judge called the photo “a nicely captured moment of quiet humor.” Another judge noted the wonderful way that the photo was framed.

The second place photograph was taken by H. Dietrich Habbe of Germany. His photo of a rape (canola) leaf taken in the late evening in a field being combined had been published in the August 14, 2004, issue of Bauernblatt. One judge called it “a masterpiece of photography. Wonderful object, good idea and perfect realization.” Another noted the way the color and back lighting worked to make the photo an interesting study. Habbe is a member of Verbandes Deutscher Agrarjournalisten (VDAJ), the German agricultural journalists association.

Gouws received 500 euros and a crystal trophy for his winning entry. Habbe received a crystal trophy for second place. The winners were announced during the Swiss IFAJ World Congress. Present at the announcement was Carina Edgren of DeLaval. DeLaval is a sponsor of the IFAJ Photo Contest.

The 2005 photo contest had 27 entries from 13 countries. All entries may be viewed by clicking here.
