South African Wins IFAJ 2005 Photo Contest
Andries Gouws photograph of a relaxing moment at a cattle
show was the winner at the 2005 IFAJ Photo Contest. The
photo had been published in the December 17, 2004, issue
of the South African publication Landbou weekblad. Gouws
is a member of the South African Agricultural Writers’
Association.
One judge called the photo “a nicely captured moment
of quiet humor.” Another judge noted the wonderful
way that the photo was framed.
The second place photograph was taken by H. Dietrich Habbe
of Germany. His photo of a rape (canola) leaf taken in the
late evening in a field being combined had been published
in the August 14, 2004, issue of Bauernblatt. One judge
called it “a masterpiece of photography. Wonderful
object, good idea and perfect realization.” Another
noted the way the color and back lighting worked to make
the photo an interesting study. Habbe is a member of Verbandes
Deutscher Agrarjournalisten (VDAJ), the German agricultural
journalists association.
Gouws received 500 euros and a crystal trophy for his winning
entry. Habbe received a crystal trophy for second place.
The winners were announced during the Swiss IFAJ World Congress.
Present at the announcement was Carina Edgren of DeLaval.

The 2005 photo contest had 27 entries from 13 countries.
