There are many in IFAJ who remember the highly regarded agri-journalist and long serving executive member Joe Watson from Scotland. He left a void behind him when he died suddenly in 2014.
In his memory the British Guild BGAJ funded a charity to improve the understanding of agriculture and provide better education for journalism and communication. The first recipients of the award were announced this June – Lauren Dean from the Farmers Guardian and freelance journalist Martin Rickatson.
Martin’s funding will help pay for his travel to the USA where he plans to investigate the potential for UK home-grown soya in light of changing trade policies.
Lauren already has used her funding to take part in an ENAJ low-budget press trip to Croatia.
“Receiving a Joe Watson Legacy Fund award enabling me to attend the visit was quite simply the cherry on top. It pushed me to challenge myself on the trip and opened a whole host of opportunities networking, interviewing and travelling I hope will carry on.”, Lauren writes in her report about the trip.
