On December 3, 2024, IFAJ’s Past President Lena Johansson and President Steve Werblow participated via Zoom in a panel discussion celebrating the Millionaire Farmer of India (MFOI) Awards.
Lena and Steve shared the virtual stage with MFOI founder and organizer MC Dominic, editor-in-chief of Krishi Jagan in India; moderator Roger Tripathi of Global BioAg Linkages; former California Secretary of Agriculture A.G. Kawamura; farmers Juan Haberman of Mexico and Rob Smit of the Netherlands; and farmer and Global Farmer Network founder AD Alvarez of the Philippines.
The discussion was shown live to attendees of the three-day conference at the IARI Grounds, PUSA, New Delhi.
The 2024 Millionaire Farmer of India program selected 1,400 award winners from among 22,000 applicants, said Dominic. The emphasis of the program is to help farmers prosper in agriculture and share insight with their neighbors on how to operate profitably.
The genesis of the Millionaire Farmer of India (MFOI) Awards can be traced back to a moment of reflection and introspection by MC Dominic, the Editor-in-Chief of Krishi Jagran. Dominic, deeply ingrained in the agricultural landscape, observed a stark contrast between the immense contributions of farmers and their lack of recognition in mainstream discourse. This observation sparked a series of contemplations and discussions, leading to the conception of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at shining a spotlight on the unsung heroes of Indian agriculture: the farmers.
The Catalyst: A Simple Yet Profound Question
The impetus for the MFOI Awards came from a simple yet profound question posed by MC Dominic: “Who is the Richest Indian Farmer?” This query encapsulated the essence of an untold narrative—a narrative of resilience, determination, and triumph amidst adversity.
Dominic’s journey back to his roots, where farmers silently competed to surpass their neighbours in wealth, revealed a quiet race for prosperity that often went unnoticed by society at large. It was this silent struggle and determination that catalyzed the MFOI Awards, igniting a movement to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of farmers.
The Vision: Bridging the Gap
The vision behind the MFOI Awards was to bridge the gap between the agricultural sector and mainstream recognition. Despite being the backbone of the nation, farmers often found themselves relegated to the sidelines, their stories of success overshadowed by tales of urban prosperity. The MFOI Awards sought to change this narrative by showcasing real-life examples of farmers who had defied the odds and achieved millionaire status through their innovative practices and unwavering determination.
Alignment with Government Agenda
The MFOI Awards align seamlessly with the government’s vision of doubling farmers’ income. By showcasing real-life examples of small farmers achieving millionaire status, the initiative reinforces the belief that every farmer has the potential to thrive with the right support and opportunities.
The awards were judged by a distinguished panel, including:
- Prof. Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog
- P. Sathasivam, Former Chief Justice of India
- Ashok Dalwai, Former CEO, National Rainfed Area Authority
- Dr. P. Chandra Shekhra, Director General, CIRDAP
- Tarun Shridhar, Former Union Secretary, DAHD
- R.S. Sodhi, President, Indian Dairy Association
International Recognition and State Representation
The international recognition garnered by the MFOI Awards underscores its global relevance and potential for replication. Partnerships with embassies and industry leaders facilitated participation from multiple countries, highlighting the initiative’s capacity to transcend geographical boundaries.
Moreover, the robust representation from various Indian states, with farmers, officers, and VIPs converging to celebrate agricultural excellence, emphasizes the inclusive nature of the initiative. The anecdote of the Ambassador of Brazil sponsoring fully paid trips for two winning farmers to attend a major event in Brazil exemplifies the global outreach and diplomatic significance of the MFOI Awards.
Promoting Diplomatic Relations and Make in India
The MFOI Awards serve as more than just a celebration of agricultural success; they also foster diplomatic relations and promote the Make in India campaign. By showcasing success stories and investment opportunities within the agricultural sector, the initiative positions India as a hub of agricultural innovation and prosperity. The anecdote of the roadshow covering every corner of India, promoting Make in India and focusing on the agricultural sector, highlights the initiative’s potential to stimulate economic growth and collaboration on a national scale.
Empowering Farmers and Promoting Environmental Sustainability
Beyond recognition and celebration, the MFOI Awards empower farmers to become advocates for change within their communities. By championing causes such as water conservation, soil health, and sustainable practices, the initiative catalyzes a broader movement towards environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
