Star Prize on Innovation

The IFAJ Star Prize on Innovation recognizes the best agricultural reporting of the year on topics of Innovation.

Journalists who belong to an IFAJ member guild in good standing are welcome to submit one entry to the IFAJ Star Prize on Innovation. Membership in your guild will be verified with guild representatives.

To be eligible, the entry:
• Must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2023.
• May the work of more than one journalist.
• Must be submitted in English or with an English translation.
•  Must be a single story, broadcast or digital media package. Multiple-story entries are not permitted—you may select one story from a series to enter.

or

• Have been a winning entry in a guild’s domestic award competition that was held between 1 January and 31 December 2023

An online entry form will be provided on the ifaj.org website. Individuals may upload their entries and fill out the online forms. Each entrant’s membership in an IFAJ member guild will be verified by a guild representative.

Each IFAJ Star Prize category will include entries representing all media. Judging criteria for media are as follows:

Print

Writing will be judged on style, credibility, creativity, clarity, use of detail, objectivity and relevance to the audience. The layout and design of the article will not be considered in the judging process.

 

Digital Media

  • Content and style, including originality and creativity, relevance and audience appeal.
  • Technical merit, focusing on the work of the journalist, including the structure of the story, the use of a variety of media and the relevance of supporting images.
  • Objectivity and balance, i.e. reflects effort to research and present an informed and balanced report.
  • Entrants should clearly exhibit their capacity to work across multimedia platforms by presenting an entry that demonstrates the use of at least three of, but not limited to, the following: text, images, audio, video.

 

Broadcast—Audio and Video

Content and style, including originality and creativity, relevance and audience appeal.

  • Technical merit, focusing on the work of the journalist, and not the whole team involved in producing the whole story, including the way the journalist uses their voice, the structure of the story, and the relevance of supporting images.
  • Objectivity and balance, i.e. reflects effort to research and present an informed and balanced report.

 

Photography

Content and style, including originality, creativity and audience appeal.

  • Technical merit, including composition and skillful use of the camera.
  • Artistry, including how the image illustrates or adds to the viewer’s comprehension of the subject. This can include abstract depictions of complex ideas.
  • Retouching to move, add or remove elements in the photo is not permitted.

 

Journalist of the Year

The IFAJ Star Prize Journalist of the Year will be chosen from among the winners of all the categories.
