10. Essential Travel Advisory for Kenya
Disclaimer: The information provided below is for general guidance only and is based on advisories available up to June 2025. All travelers are strongly encouraged to consult their respective country’s official travel advisories (e.g., Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Department) and their embassy or consulate in Kenya for the most current and personalized information before making travel arrangements.
A General Advisory & Overall Caution Level International government advisories typically recommend exercising a high degree of caution when traveling in Kenya, including Nairobi.
B Visa and Entry Requirements (eTA)
- Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Effective January 5, 2024, Kenya implemented an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system. With limited exceptions, ALL international visitors are required to apply for and obtain an eTA before commencing their journey to Kenya. This system replaces the previous e-visa platform.
- Application Portal: Applications for the eTA must be made through the official government portal: https://www.etakenya.go.ke.
- Cost and Validity: The standard processing fee for an eTA is approximately 30 USD. It is generally recommended to apply at least two weeks prior to your intended travel date, although applications can be submitted up to three months in advance. The eTA is typically valid for a single entry and for a period of 90 days from the date of issue.
- Passport Requirements: Travelers must have a passport with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry into Kenya. The passport must also contain at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
- Yellow Fever Certificate: Proof of yellow fever immunization (a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate) is required for entry for travelers aged one year or older arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission, or for travelers who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. It is crucial to check the World Health Organization (WHO) list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.
C Health and Vaccinations
- Consult Healthcare Provider: It is strongly recommended that all attendees consult their doctor, a travel medicine clinic, or their national health advisory service at least 4-6 weeks before departure for personalized health advice and to ensure all routine and travel-specific vaccinations are up to date.
- Recommended Vaccinations: Commonly recommended vaccinations for travel to Kenya may include Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and Polio. Depending on individual risk factors, vaccinations for Meningitis (Kenya is in the meningitis belt; vaccination recommended during the dry season, Dec-June), Rabies, and Hepatitis B might also be considered.
- Malaria Prevention: Malaria is a risk in areas under 8,200ft (approx. 2,500m), which includes Nairobi. Malaria prophylaxis (preventative medication) is recommended. Malaria in Kenya is resistant to chloroquine; consult your doctor for appropriate medication. Consistent use of insect repellent, especially during dawn and dusk, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets are also crucial.
- Medical Facilities and Insurance: Access to comprehensive medical facilities can be limited outside Nairobi. In Nairobi, private hospitals offer a higher standard of care but can be expensive, and upfront payment is often required. It is essential for all attendees to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, hospitalization, and emergency medical evacuation.
- Food and Water Safety: Drink only bottled or purified water. Avoid ice unless made from safe water. Be cautious with raw or undercooked foods.
- Other Health Considerations: Be aware of other potential health risks like mpox and stay updated through official health authorities.
D Safety and Security (Nairobi Focus)
- General Crime: Both petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching, theft from vehicles by thieves on motorcycles) and more serious violent crime (armed robbery, carjacking, home invasions) can occur in Nairobi. Be vigilant in public spaces, markets, and transport hubs. Avoid displaying valuables openly.
- Specific Areas in Nairobi: Some official travel advisories suggest avoiding non-essential travel to certain neighborhoods like Eastleigh and Kibera, particularly after dark, due to higher crime rates.
- Night Travel: Avoid walking alone or in unfamiliar areas after dark. Use reputable taxi services (booked through your hotel or a reliable ride-hailing app).
- Terrorism: There is an ongoing threat of terrorism in Kenya. Attacks can target locations frequented by foreigners. Maintain high situational awareness.
- Demonstrations and Civil Unrest: Protests can occur, sometimes with little warning, and may turn violent or cause significant traffic disruptions, including to the airport. Avoid large public gatherings.
- Key Safety Tips:
- If confronted by armed criminals, do not resist.
- Carry a copy of your passport and eTA; keep originals secure.
- Beware of scams, including individuals impersonating officials.
- Be cautious about drink spiking; never leave drinks unattended.
E Currency and Payments
- Official Currency: The Kenyan Shilling (KES).
- US Dollars: Widely accepted for tourism expenses (hotels, tours). USD notes must be printed after 2006; older notes are often not accepted.
- Kenyan Shillings for Daily Use: Advisable for smaller purchases, local markets, and some tips.
- ATMs and Banks: ATMs are available in Nairobi, dispensing KES. Inform your bank of travel plans.
- Credit Cards: Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) accepted at larger establishments. When paying by card, it’s generally advisable to choose to be charged in KES to avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
- Tipping: Customary for good service. Around 10% in restaurants (KES). Tour guides/drivers often tipped in USD.
- Currency Regulations: No restrictions on foreign currency entry. Restrictions on KES exit (approx. 100,000 KES).
F Emergency Contacts
- Local Emergency Numbers: While numbers like 999/112 exist, responsiveness can be limited.
- Embassy/Consulate: Keep contact details for your country’s embassy or consulate in Nairobi.
