Foot-and-mouth 20 Years On: Generations of farmers reflect on their foot-and-mouth experiences
Marking 20 years since the foot-and-mouth crisis which devastated rural Britain, Hannah Binns, who was a young child at the time, talked to those who lived through the crisis, asking how it changed farming lives and wider agriculture. The special feature, which ran in the print edition of Farmers Guardian, over six pages, as well as online, highlighted the toll the disease took on farming families as well as livestock. It also looked at how vets’ careers have been shaped since then, how the furore impacted rural tourism and farmers’ efforts to collect semen and embryos to ensure herd genetics for future generations.
