Freedom of expression through the media is fundamental to democracy. That freedom is shaken by the attacks on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, which stood literally and figuratively as a bastion of press freedom.
The tragedy at Charlie Hebdo reminds us of how democracy is under constant threat in our world today, in war-torn nations and peaceful societies alike. The number of journalists murdered, killed on duty and imprisoned worldwide grows constantly.
As a federation of international journalists, we must continue our work to help those striving to achieve freedom of expression. We stand united against the tyranny of extremism, hate and repression.
Our condolences to the families and friends of those who died in the Charlie Hebdo attacks, and to those who perished trying to defend them.
